Emergency Medicine & General Medical Experience

1969-1972:  General practitioner - Washington D.C. Free Clinic.  The clinic was then located on Wisconsin Ave. in Georgetown.  Practice consisted of general medicine and some minor emergency medicine.  A heavy mix of gynecological, urological and drug related problems as well as the usual minor ailments.  Emergencies were covered by Georgetown University Hospital via ambulance when necessary. During this time I also directed the small laboratory, provided instruction and quality control for the lab and monitored  results.

1969-1972:  Team physician for the D.C. Bears, a minor league semi-professional football team, then coached by John Vaughn, now director of the Shack Clinic ( in conjunction with the D.C. Department of Health and the Drug Rehabilitation programs).

1969:  Trained as a flight surgeon at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.  On returning from this nine week refresher in Ear, Nose, Throat, Cardiovascular and Industrial medicine, I provided support for Air Force members assigned to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the experimental Hypobaric (altitude) chamber.  I also held routine sick call for the assigned Air Force Members assigned to the Institute.

1972-1974:  Assigned to Incirlick Common Defense Installation, Adana, Turkey.  While there, I acted as a general medical officer and emergency medical officer and as flight surgeon.  During the first four months assigned, I was the only flight surgeon available to the unit.  During this assignment I took emergency room call weekly as well as working in the General Medical Clinic weekly. These duties occupied approximately 25% of my professional time.  I was assigned as Chief of Professional Services and was also responsible for the monitoring of over 15 outlying medical clinics scattered at small sites throughout Turkey.   During this time I had admitting privileges and treated patients in a hospital setting.  During this period I worked closely with a board certified internist, a general surgeon, an Ophthalmologist, and an orthopod.

1975-1977:  During this period, I was associated with the Jacksonville Drug Rescue unit, providing emergency care at weekly concerts and sporting events in Jacksonville.  This was coordinated by Chief of the Health, Welfare and Bioenvironmental  Services of Jacksonville.

1975-1977:  During this period I also worked with the Jacksonville Crisis Center.  I also participated, as a committee member, educator and worker  of the Suicide Prevention  and Post Suicide Assistance Program. 

1976-1977:   Commander of the 919th Tactical Clinic for the Air Force Reserves, two days monthly and two weeks yearly.  In addition to providing administrative direction, I acted as a provider of general medical aid, did as many as 40 physical per weekend and provided emergency care for over 600 reservists.  During this period, the clinic was awarded a citation as the best USAF Reserve Clinic in the USAF Reserve for 1976.

1975-1977:   I was also involved with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Jacksonville, where I provided first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation  instruction.  During these periods of time, I was certified in CPR.

1978-1982:   Worked in the Greater Southeast Community Hospital  as an Emergency Room staff physician.  I became certified in Advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation during this time and have remained current in ACLS and CPR since.  I also resumed my duties as Flight Surgeon at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and duties associated with the Altitude chamber. 

1982-1985:   Assigned to the USAF Regional Medical Center at Wiesbaden, Germany.  While there I took Emergency room call monthly as well as being Flight Surgeon on call.  During this period of time, I became certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support.

November 1985 to October 1986:  I worked as senior staff physician at the Emergency room of Southern Maryland Hospital, Emergency Department and Shock Trauma Unit.  During this period I averaged 30 to 35 hours weekly in the Emergency Room.

October 1,1986 through March 1988:  Staff physician with the Saint Vincent’s Ambulatory Care Centers of Jacksonville.  I was on the staff of Jacksonville Medical Center, Jacksonville, Florida during the period while in Jacksonville.  During this period I practiced general medicine averaging 48 hours weekly.  I was on the staff at Jacksonville Medical Center during this period. 

April 1, 1988 to February 17, 1989:  To avail myself of an opportunity to settle in one office, I began working in the Primedical Clinic System.  We currently split the work week which runs from 8 am to 8 pm, averaging about 200 hours a month. The practice consists of acute care, pediatrics (over 1 year old), some occupational and sports medicine and general medical practice.  Average patient load was about 30 patients per day.

February 20, 1989 to October 10, 1990  Associated with a Central Florida Family Practice.  I saw general medical patients as well as supervise and direct the pathology laboratory for the group.  The laboratory was certified by HRS on August 22, 1989.  The laboratory employs 6 technologists/technicians and processes over 7000 specimens monthly.  Cytology and Histopathology specimens are also done, with a yearly load of 900 cytology and 300 histology specimens. During the last six months, I functioned primarily as a family practitioner at the  Lake Mary office, FL. I was released after the Lake Mary office was closed on October 10, 1991.

August 1, 1991 through November 1994: Part time at Deltona Family Medical Clinic, Deltona, FL 32725.  Family medicine and acute emergent care facility.

October 10, 1991 to October 12, 1992 Full time at the Ocoee Family Medical Center, Ocoee, FL.  During this period, I worked with general medical patients at that office as well as associated offices on International Drive (First Aid),  Lakepoint Medical Center,  Regency Medical Center and BVL Medical  Center.  I  resigned to work with Physician’s Geriatric Services. 

October 12, 1992 to October 2, 1997:  Physician’s Geriatric Services, now Long Term Care Physicians of Florida, Inc.   The Florida branch is centered in Tampa.  I was responsible for the Orlando area nursing homes associated with the organization. Facilities for which I am responsible for and associated with as Medical Director are in Orlando, DeLand, Mount Dora, Claremont, Sanford and Daytona, Kissimmee.   I am responsible for approximately 900 patients, five nurse practitioners and approximately 22 nursing homes.  My practice consisted of evaluation, diagnosis, treatment  and consultation in Geriatrics as well as consultant to Long Term Care Physicians in Laboratory Medicine.  

I am currently on staff at a Florida Hospital in Family Practice.
