AVIATION SAFETY

Over 40 years’ experience in aviation safety including military, civilian, and NASA operations. Responsibilities have included developing, monitoring and evaluating aviation safety programs from the activity/unit level up to Army level as the US Army Europe (USAREUR) Aviation Safety Evaluator. In this position I was responsible for flight safety program monitoring and evaluation of all US Army aviation units in Europe and the Middle East. Received training in aviation and aerospace safety at the University of Southern California, U.S. Army, and NASA.

 

ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION/ANALYSIS

Conducted over 100 aircraft accident investigations and reconstructions. Investigations have ranged from minor incidents to major accidents with multiple fatalities. Training in aircraft accident analysis and investigation has included the University of Southern California, University of Arizona, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), U.S. Army, and NASA. Accident investigation support has been provided to all U.S. Army aviation units in Europe and the Middle East. I have performed airplane and helicopter accident analysis support on numerous litigation cases including rotor and turbulence, aircraft performance, maintenance, ATC procedures, flight operations and air ambulance operations. Customers have included military, Department of Justice, aerospace corporations, and legal firms.

 

AEROSPACE SAFETY ENGINEERING

NASA - Deputy Director of Safety Engineering for 6 years on NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center contract with supervision of 35 engineers. Provided technical and managerial interfaces with NASA customers during program reviews, manufacture, launch support, facility inspections and operation of space hardware. Lead Safety Engineer for space shuttle operations, payloads processing, space station development, and industrial safety monitoring. Provided hazard analysis, technical review and supervision for elements for NASA Safety and Mission Assurance Engineering groups.

U.S. Army — I provided safety analysis of research and development (R&D) equipment installed on test aircraft and performed as the Government Flight Representative (GFR) for the U.S. Army, Fog-M Missile program.

 

AVIATION OPERATIONS

Principle, Aerospace Services Co, Alabama. Provide customers with aviation services including aircraft accident analysis, accident reconstruction, expert witness testimony, aircraft performance, flight operations, and analysis of R&D equipment installed on test aircraft.

R&D Test Pilot, US Army Aviation and Missile Command, Flight Directorate, Huntsville, Alabama. Responsible for performing flight safety program management, R&D flight testing of weapon systems, aircraft maintenance test flights, airworthiness certifications, and accident investigations.

Airfield Commander, 5th Corp USAREUR, Germany.  Responsible for management, daily operations, contracting, and safety at one of the busiest US Army airfields in Germany. Officer responsible for airfield safety compliance surveys, sensitive munitions landing site surveys, and establishing primary airfields during major Army exercises.

 

AERODYNAMICS

Over 30 years experience teaching and evaluating practical helicopter aerodynamics for military and civilian pilots and instructor pilots.  College level aerodynamics classroom instructor.

 

FLIGHT EXPERIENCE

Flight Hours - 5500 total accident free hours, 4700 helicopter hours, 700 fixed wing hours, 4000 pilot in command hours, 2500 instructor pilot hours, 100+ instrument hours, 500 test pilot hours, 1000 combat flight hours.

Instructor Pilot - 18 years instructor pilot experience. Responsibilities ranged from instructing individual pilots up to instructing and evaluating standardization instructor pilots. Standardization instructor for maintenance test pilots.
