Work Experience

12/98-present, Extension Dairy Specialist/Associate Professor, (70/30 extension/teaching.)  Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at university in Kansas.  Responsibilities include development of state wide extension programs in the areas of dairy cattle nutrition, management and heifer development.  Areas of research are dairy cattle and heifer nutrition and heat stress.  Teaching responsibilities include an upper level dairy management course.

8/96-12/98, Commercial Agriculture Dairy Specialist/Assistant Professor, (80/20 extension/applied research.)  Animal Sciences Unit, university in Missouri.  Responsibilities included development of state wide extension programs in the areas of dairy cattle nutrition, management and heifer development.  Specific nutritional responsibilities included calves, heifers and forage quality.  Applied research projects emphasized systems to improve forage quality and methods to reduce soybean meal degradation in the rumen.

1/94-7/96, Assistant Professor, (60/40 research/teaching) Department of Dairy Science, university in South Dakota.  Research emphasis was energy and forage utilization of early lactation dairy cattle.  Teaching responsibilities included instruction of undergraduate and graduate level dairy production courses including; Introduction to Dairy Science, Dairy Cattle Breeds and Breeding, Dairy Cattle Feeding, Dairy Farm Management, Dairy Cattle Evaluation, Laboratory Techniques, and Artificial Insemination.  Other responsibilities were assisting with the management and nutrition programs at the research unit, coaching the dairy cattle evaluation team, undergraduate and graduate advising, assisting with extension programs, departmental computer network administrator, and departmental computer hardware advisor/technician.

1/91-12/93, Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Dairy Science, university in South Dakota.  Responsible for the supervision of research projects involving protein and energy utilization of early lactation dairy cattle, and the response of dairy cattle to a recombinant pharmaceutical.  Additional responsibilities included chemical analysis of feeds, data summary, statistical analysis of data, and supervision of student labor.

Graduate Teaching Assistant.  Instruction of "Dairy Cattle Feeding" a three hour, upper level, undergraduate dairy cattle nutrition course.

4/89-12/90, Livestock Production Specialist, Cenex/Land O’Lakes Ag Services.  Primarily responsible for the management of a sales territory including direct feed sales, sales planning, development of producer management programs, ration formulation, and nutritional consultation with dairy and beef producers.

7/87-3/89, Graduate Research Assistant, Dairy Science Department, university in Missouri.  Responsibilities included the supervision of digestion research trials with dairy cattle, general wet chemistry feed analysis, evaluation of data utilizing mainframe and micro computers, and the design and construction of a computer assisted data collection system to capture chewing behavior of dairy cattle.

8/85-6/87, Research Specialist, Agronomy/Animal Science Departments, university in Missouri.  Responsibilities included design and implementation of soil fertility experiments with forage crops, conducting standard soil and plant mineral analysis utilizing atomic absorption spectrophotometers, supervision of student labor, and research machinery construction.

8/84-7/85, Student Research Assistant, Agronomy Department, university in Missouri.  Duties included soil and plant mineral analysis, fertilization and harvesting of forage plots, and data summary.
