Computer engineering expert witness is an expert who is qualified to provide an opinion on computer hardware, software, and systems in a legal dispute. These experts have advanced knowledge of the computer engineering field to assist in fact-finding or litigation. They may work with attorneys, consultants, and other parties involved in the dispute to provide technical analysis regarding the performance of a certain system or device related to the issue.


The specific qualifications for a computer engineering expert witness vary depending on their area of expertise; however, this may include having obtained certificates from accredited institutions such as CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert), MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator), PMP (Project Management Professional), etc. Furthermore, they must possess proven knowledge that bridges technical and business issues so that they are able to analyze data both technically and from a legal perspective.


Computer engineers will usually review documents such as specifications documents for hardware/software systems as well as user stories or requirements documents; produce written reports summarizing their findings; attend conferences and hearings; appear before courts when required; analyze any related source codes used by systems under scrutiny; apply company’s proprietary methods of technology assessment and analysis; make initial assessments regarding patent infringements claims’ validity among others. To do these tasks efficiently they need deep understanding of various programming languages like Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) & Apache Hadoop .NET Framework etc., Application Virtualization technologies, Operating System platforms(Windows,Unix & Linux)and Web Technologies etc.
