A engineering expert witness is a professional engineer who has specialized knowledge and experience in a subject within the field of science and engineering. An engineering expert witness can help to interpret evidence or provide impartial testimony in legal proceedings involving technical issues.

The duties of an engineering expert witness typically include analyzing data from various sources, researching applicable codes, standards, and regulations related to the dispute at hand as well as preparing reports for presentation at trial or deposition. Depending on the case, an engineer may be asked to provide testimony on topics related to product design defects, personal injury claims from industrial accidents, patent infringement cases involving technologies or processes, or other areas of applied science such as medical device technology or environmental contamination.

In addition to providing expertise in legal disputes outside of court proceedings, an engineering expert witness also may be called upon for pre-trial opinion sharing with attorneys or plaintiffs when their technical input can help inform the scope of response documents requested by parties involved in litigation before a formal hearing takes place. In some cases they also offer insight into how safety protocols should be developed after a litigation proceeding occurs to avoid similar situations associated with negligence occurring again in future instances.
