As a college instructor and retired law enforcement officer, I am uniquely qualified to accept either position. My nearly three decades of police work, I investigated hundreds of cases of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse cases. In the last ten years of retirement I worked as a background investigator for the Los Angeles Police Department and numerous law enforcement background companies and taught Law Enforcement courses in the Vocational and Community College arenas.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INITIATIVES:  With two other officers, founded first 24-hour Domestic Violence Unit in Santa Monica; served as L.A. Sheriff’s Department representative in domestic violence from 1982 to 2005; led Family Crimes Bureau Domestic Violence Unit 

PROGRAMMING:  Assisted City of Barstow Police Department in creating Domestic Violence Program; developed Lynwood Station’s Domestic Violence Program; served as founding task force member for West Hollywood Domestic Violence Program; supervisor, Family Crime Bureau STOP Team and Child Abuse Investigations Team

POLICY DEVELOPMENT:  Worked with department and community experts to develop policies to respond to and prevent domestic violence, elder and child abuse

STRATEGIC COORDINATION:  Experienced in working with teams on many major projects, including a groundbreaking pooling of resources from West Hollywood law enforcement, city and community partners on program to educate, prevent and intervene in domestic violence, especially in LGBT community

TRAINING:  As part of Watson Bill, taught mandated 8-hour training in domestic violence to the majority of L.A. Sheriff’s Department personnel, including supervisors, department executives and other training staff; also instructed Academy recruits for 20 years in LD 25, Domestic Violence; Instructor in Family Violence including Elder Abuse and Child Abuse for Department and Community members upon request

TRAINING MATERIALS:  Developed departmental curriculum on domestic violence, including course outline, tests, handouts and audio-visual materials

INVESTIGATIONS:  Skilled in investigating all types of complaints, incidents and crimes. Detective Division for approximately 9 years. 

PEER COUNSELING:  Certified Peer Counselor for Employee Support Services, 1988 to 2005; counseled officers in confidential matters

COMMUNICATION:  Represented L.A. Sheriff’s Department at numerous workshops, conferences and seminars sponsored by community and professional groups relating to Domestic Violence, Safety and Child Abuse

SUPERVISION:  Numerous supervisory positions, including the Pasadena Courthouse where I supervised 100 employees to the Advocacy Unit where I supervised one.

Sheriff’s Department in Civil Service and arbitration hearings; thorough knowledge of EEO and ADA regulations; assisted department executives in negotiations; reviewed cases for administrative investigations; wrote disposition worksheets, legal outlines and briefs; recommended final dispositions to unit commanders
