AVIATION SAFETY

Over 40 years of experience in aviation safety including military, civilian, and NASA operations. Responsibilities have included developing and evaluating aviation safety programs from the activity/unit level up to major Army level as the US Army Europe, Aviation Safety Officer. In this position I was responsible for flight safety program monitoring and evaluation of all US Army aviation units in Europe and the Middle East.

ACCIDENT ANALYSIS & INVESTIGATIONS

  • Extensive experience in aircraft accident investigations and reconstructions. Investigations have ranged from minor damage to major accidents with multiple fatalities.
  • Provided accident investigation support to all U.S. Army aviation units in Europe and the Middle East.
  • Performed Expert Witness services and helicopter accident analysis on numerous litigation cases including rotor wash, wake turbulence, accident reconstruction, aircraft performance, and flight operations.
  • Trained in accident analysis and investigation at the University of Southern California, University of Arizona, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center.

SAFETY ENGINEERING

  • NASA – Deputy Director of Safety Engineering for 6 years on NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center contract with supervision of 35 engineers. Provided technical and managerial interfaces with NASA customers during program reviews, manufacture, launch support, facility inspections and operation of space hardware. Lead Engineer for space shuttle operations, payloads processing, space station development, and industrial safety monitoring. Provided hazard analysis, technical reviews, and supervision for all elements of the Safety and Mission Assurance engineering groups.
  • U.S. Army – Provided safety analysis of R&D test articles installed on test aircraft and performed as the Government Flight Representative (GFR) for the U.S. Army, Fog-M Missile program.

AVIATION OPERATIONS

  • Principle, Aerospace Services Co, Alabama. Provide customers with aviation services including expert witness testimony, aircraft accident analysis, accident reconstruction, aircraft performance evaluation, and analysis of R&D equipment installed on test aircraft.
  • R&D Test Flight Pilot, US Army Aviation and Missile Command, Flight Directorate, Huntsville, Alabama. Responsible for performing flight safety program management, R&D weapon systems flight testing, aircraft maintenance test flights, air worthiness certifications, and accident investigations.
  • Airfield Commander, fifth Corp, U.S. Army Europe, Germany. Responsible for daily operation and safety at one of the busiest US Army airfields in Germany. Officer responsible for airfield compliance surveys, sensitive munitions landing site surveys, and establishing primary airfields during major army exercises.

AERODYNAMICS

Over 25 years’ experience teaching and evaluating practical helicopter aerodynamics for military and civilian pilots and instructor pilots. College level airplane and helicopter aerodynamics classroom instructor.

FLIGHT EXPERIENCE

  • Flight Hours – 4400 total accident-free hours, 4000 helicopter hours, 400 fixed wing hours, 3000 pilot in command hours, 2300 instructor pilot hours, 100+ instrument hours, 500 test pilot hours, 1000 combat flight hours.
  • Instructor Pilot –18 years instructor pilot experience. Responsibilities ranged from instructing individual pilots to Standardization Instructor Pilot (SIP) for all US Army instructor pilots in Europe and the Middle East.
  • Aircraft Flown – Bell 205 (UH-1), UH-60, AH-1, AH-64, Bell 47 (OH-13), Bell 206 (OH-58), Hughes 500 (OH-6), MD600N, Hughes 300 (TH-55), A-4, L-19, Cessna 150/172/182, AN-2, Blanca Super Viking
  • Ratings – Commercial helicopter, instrument, and airplane ratings

  • D., R&D Engineering Management, Southeast Institute of Technology, coursework complete.
  • MBA, Computer Information Systems, Florida Institute of Technology, degree awarded 1988.
  • BS, Professional Aeronautics, Embry Riddle University, degree awarded 1983.
