Launched Private Company (registered as a Commodity Trading Advisor, CFTC) in the fall of 1992. Under their leadership, the firm has come to be recognized as the energy market’s leading independent technical and statistical consultancy and solutions firm for energy price analysis, derivatives strategies and valuation, hedging, risk management, trading methods, and hedging and risk management policies and procedures. The Expert Witness’s accomplishments include advising, on an ongoing retainer basis, a range of energy consumers, producers, and marketers as well as banks and other financial institutions on trading and hedging strategies, risk limits and risk analysis programs, providing firms with comprehensive risk management programs, including policies and procedures, and developing training courses on energy hedging and trading, policy and procedure development, and derivatives and commodity trading, which they presented to thousands of attendees.

Their accomplishments also include development of computer based hedging systems, HedgeModel and ezHedge, custom trader risk limit, value at risk, and options pricing models, as well chart studies carried by most major charting service worldwide, and a new forecasting model.  The Expert Witness has spoken at all the major energy and trading conferences numerous times, including Gas and Power Mart, Colorado Oil and Gas Association, Energy Expo, Futures Industry Expo, Independent Producers Association of America, Independent Producers Association of New Mexico, Canadian GasMart, Omega World, TAG (Technical Analysis Group), Futures Magazine Conferences, New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, and INO Conferences. They have been featured in many videos produced by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, eSignal, Ninja Trader, CQG, Bloomberg and more, has appeared on CNBC’s “Tech Talk” program, and is widely published in both the energy and trading press. Their 13-part video series and workbook was released in March 2015 by Bloomberg Press.

The Expert Witness is often invited to speak about their areas of expertise at Energy Management and related MBA programs, and acts as an expert witness in the areas of energy trading and hedging, derivatives and financial analysis issues, including financial damage issues.

Director Energy Risk Management and Trading, Saudi Oil Ministry, NYC

Consulted with the Saudi downstream marketing and refining arm, Samarec, to establish a field office in New York, including setting up all information systems for trading and market technology, as well as charting and price analysis. Reviewed major refined products and liquids contracts, advised senior officials on pricing strategy, developed automated hedging model for propane, and introduced hedging and risk management concepts.

Vice President, Risk Manager Commodity Products, Chemical Bank, NYC

As one of the industry’s first energy derivatives traders, developed accounting policy, credit policy, statistical and mathematical modeling, valuation models for swaps and options, software development, hardware and operational infrastructure requirements, as well as identification, targeting, education and cultivation of prospective clients. Published weekly newsletter on energy derivatives and hedging opportunities for bank’s clients. Was also responsible for the institution’s 5000 contract book, hedging swaps and options. Provided forecasting advice to the banks’ clients and started outside consulting practice. Reviewed heads of terms, and executed transactions.

Area Manager, International Clean Products Trading
Was responsible for all clean product (gasoline, jet fuel, gasoils) trading for the western half of the Western Hemisphere and Transatlantic. Introduced the trading of standardized forward product cargoes, the precursor to today’s derivatives’ market. Besides trading 35,000 MT physical cargoes, which involved negotiating contract terms and closing deals with major and state-run oil companies, as well as a wide-range of other industry participants, they introduced technical trading concepts and the use of exchange traded contracts for hedging cash business. The Expert Witness’s work also involved negotiating many deals for the purchase of various off-spec blendstocks for blending into on-spec distillate products. During this time, The Expert Witness served on the NYMEX marketing sub-committee, spoke at NYMEX events as an expert on hedging heating oil, acted as an industry advisor to the Futures Industry Institute, and provided expert advice to the Association of Energy Professionals.

1983 – 1985, Chevron International Oil Company, LLC, San Francisco, CA
Senior Trading Coordinator
Transferred into the international trading arm responsible for all foreign crude and products during a time the Freeport Refinery was operating, the firm had extensive North Sea gas contracts, and a strong European presence. Advised management on transaction economics, contract policy, term formulae, litigation issues, shipping, scheduling, blending, especially of fuel oils, processing, stock loss issues, financial issues, and technical and valuation matters. Introduced the use of computers into trading, streamlined back office operations (the deal-making process capture and documentation), and was responsible for “opportunity” (speculative) trading.
