Significant Supporting Activities

Administration and Institutional service. (a) Administrative leadership. I provide administrative leadership as the Service Chief for Body Ultrasound, where I my responsibilities include medical oversight of 50 sonographers, a technical manager, and an operations manager, who perform ~70,000 sonograms per year at 10 practice locations. The MGH Division of Ultrasound has maintained excellent productivity, clinical standards, and morale during my tenure. I have been directly responsible for bringing advanced ultrasound technologies into clinical practice at MGH, including shear wave elastography, which is now widely used for liver disease risk stratification and contrast enhanced ultrasound, which is used for liver lesion characterization. (b) Faculty mentorship. I presently mentor three MGH Radiology Faculty outside my research group. I assist these faculty with career strategy, grant preparation, and creative ideation, with excellent outcomes. The two faculty mentees who have applied to date have both received career development awards.

Investigation. My research group and others pioneered shear wave ultrasound elastography in the United States, generating key early evidence for use of the technique in chronic liver disease. More recently, through NIH-supported work, we have shown that quantitative ultrasound parameters can be used to detect ischemia in candidate transplant graft livers and that convolutional neural networks can be used to automate and improve the performance of shear wave elastography in the liver and breast. My work in data analysis combines with my interests in electromechanical device design to produce medical devices guided by advanced signal processing. My group has collaboratively developed multiple prototype medical devices and in the past four years I have published multiple senior author papers in the clinical and engineering literature in fields as diverse as translational research, device engineering, ultrasound physics, signal processing, and statistical methods.

Contributions in Teaching

Foundations of Translational Imaging Research Training Program. I established a training program for postdoctoral research fellows in 2016. This program comprises a combination of didactic teaching, mentored research, and self-directed reading. More than thirty post-doctoral fellows have gone through this program and have benefited from instruction focused specifically on the needs of junior imaging researchers.’
Radiology resident teaching. I routinely teach Radiology residents at the viewing workstation for approximately 8 hours per week. I also lecture at the Radiology resident review series and provide informal examination tutorials in the field of medical ultrasound.

Lecturing. I lecture on ultrasound physics at the Harvard/MIT HST program and periodically lecture in MIT engineering courses regarding technology translation.
Abdominal Imaging textbooks. I co-edited a comprehensive subspecialty Radiology textbook, Abdominal Imaging, Expert Consult, published by Elsevier in 2010. This book comprises 1,600 pages over two volumes and is a widely-used reference text in the USA and internationally. I was extensively involved in this book and authored 11 chapters. A Spanish Edition was released in 2013, and the second edition was released in September 2016. I am presently under contract with Elsevier to produce another book, the Abdominal Imaging Requisites, targeted for release in 2020. These books have served as a mechanism to amplify and spread my teaching activities beyond the MGH, MIT, and Harvard Medical School.
