His duties included technical and management responsibility for a team of professional engineers in addition to my existing responsibilities for acting as a consultant to provide independent and unprejudiced advice associated with the investigation of technical problems principally concerning, but not limited to, industrial machinery and marine propulsion and auxiliary systems. The scope of the work ranges from the initial quotation stage to completion of the final report, including pre-site analysis and calculations, on-site measurements and data analysis.

Investigations have been undertaken and completed all over the world, some under difficult circumstances and in some very difficult locations. He trained in the management of commercial risk and have extensive experience in the building and maintaining of high level client relations.

EXPERIENCE:

He began his engineering career as a Technician Apprentice within the diesel engine manufacturing industry, satisfactorily completing four years. After pursuing other interests for a number of years the chance became available to re-join Mirrlees Blackstone (Stamford) Ltd as a Metallurgical Laboratory Technician.

Mirrlees Blackstone (Stamford) Limited

As a laboratory technician, he was responsible for chemical and mechanical testing of materials and lubricants and subsequently moved to the Design Department where work involved the design and modification of existing diesel engine components and systems, for reasons of product reliability, serviceability and customer specific requirements. Transferring within the company to the Development Department, he carried out all aspects of engine performance and mechanical component and systems development, ‘in house’ and ‘in field’ technical problem solving and ‘on site’ commissioning measurements and analysis and was responsible for all associated technical reports. He was promoted to Development Department Group Leader, where he was responsible for day to day departmental administration along with continuation of my technical responsibilities.

The closure of engine production gave him the opportunity to take up a career in the Quality Engineering domain of high volume diesel engine production at Perkins Engines (Peterborough) Ltd.

Perkins Engines (Peterborough) Limited (Now Caterpillar)

Working in both the Mechanical and Performance Departments, the emphasis was on rapid response solutions to day to day quality issues arising within engine production and in the ‘field’.
At this time he was also able to gain experience on new product validation and compliance procedures and was responsible for all necessary technical reporting involved with the above duties.

Alsthom (Napier) Turbochargers

One of the world’s major turbocharger manufacturers, he was able to further my career in technical investigation and problem solving. The role also gave him the chance to travel extensively to wherever the company’s products were being used and was responsible for the necessary technical reporting associated with the above duties. He then transferred within the group to the gas turbine manufacturing side of the business. This enabled him to broaden my knowledge of gas turbines and the wider aspects of commercial projects from tender launch to completion.

Lloyd’s Register’s Technical Investigation Department (TID)

In 2000 he joined Lloyd’s Register undertaking duties and responsibilities as above. For the past seven years he has been involved with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in the mentoring of applicants in mature candidate schemes and additionally is currently involved with the IMechE committees assessing engineering technicians (EngTech) applications and the Integrated Apprenticeship Scheme Approval process.
