Expert is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science in New York. He has a BBA degree in Finance from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem N.C., an MBA in Accounting from Pace University in New York, and a PhD in Business Administration with a major in Real Estate from Georgia State University in Atlanta Georgia. He meets several continuing education requirements to maintain professional designations, licenses, and expertise.
Real Estate Designations and Licenses.
Expert is a State Certified General Appraiser with licenses in Illinois, Texas, Florida, Georgia and Kentucky. He holds the MAI, SRA and SREA designations from the Appraisal Institute; and the ASA designation from the American Society of Appraisers. He is a Counselor of Real Estate (CRE) awarded by the American Society of Real Estate Counselors, and a stockholder of the Real Estate Consulting Group of America. He is a Weimer Fellow in the Homer Hoyt Institute. He has been licensed as a real estate broker in Texas for 40 years.
Accounting Designations and Licenses.
Expert is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) originally earned in New York in 1969, licensed in Texas since 1976. He holds additional credentials awarded by the American Institute of CPAs including: Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF), Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV), Certified Global Management Accountant (CGMA).
Professional Employment.
Expert practiced as a CPA with a firm now known as Price Waterhouse Coopers (1967-1971) and Deloitte & Touche (1990-1992). He served in auditing, tax, and consulting departments. He served real lenders, developers, stock brokerage firms and mutual funds.
Academic Employment.
He has been an assistant professor at Georgia State University (1971-1976), an associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington (1976-1978), and a full professor at Texas A&M University in College Station Texas, in the Finance Department and Texas Real Estate Research Center (1979-1990). He held the Julio S. LaGuarta Professorship for a five year term (1985-1990), and was senior research economist for six years. He developed and taught graduate courses in real estate finance, income property appraisal and real estate investment analysis. He pioneered computerized real estate investment analysis, developing complex programs on both mainframe and personal computers. He has taught and developed courses for major appraisal organizations. He taught in Russia for the World Bank, and for the ASA in Slovenia.
Self-Employed Expert Witness and Consulting Practice.
Since 1990 Expert’s work has been principally as a real estate consultant and expert witness in high profile, high stakes business litigation. He has testified in more than 50 cases including business disputes, condemnations, ad valorem taxation, construction defects, and environmental impairment. Clients include the US Department of Justice, FDIC, IRS, City of Dallas, Exxon-Mobil, JC Penney, Sears, BP, Maine Yankee Atomic Power, and various insurance companies, banks and individuals. Attorneys who have engaged him include prestigious large and mid-sized firms, and boutiques.
Research and Publications.
Expert has written or co-authored more than 200 scholarly articles and more than 20 books. His book publishers include Prentice-Hall, John Wiley, Warren Gorham & Lamont, MacMillian Free Press, Reston, and Barron’s Educational Series. One book is now in its 11th edition, others are in ninth, eighth, fifth, and third editions. Several of his books have been listed as among the most important in their field and some have been on best seller lists. More than one million of his books have been sold, making him among the most prolific and best selling authors in business and real estate.
Service.
Expert served for a total of six years in the US Army Reserves and the New York National Guard, with the MOS 11B10 (infantry) and 11H10 (artillery); and payroll clerk. He has served on various professional committees in accounting and appraisal professions, and on editorial boards of leading real estate journals. He has received honors and awards for teaching, research, and economic forecasting competitions. He is a 2017 recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from the Marquis Who’s Who Publications Board.
