A forensic genetics expert witness is an expert in the field of DNA analysis and forensics who can be called to testify in both criminal and civil court trials.
Forensic genetics experts have extensive knowledge and experience with a variety of complex DNA analysis techniques, including those used for relatives’ identification, parentage testing, individual identification and crime scene investigation. They provide assistance to law enforcement officials by analyzing crime-scene evidence or personal items that may contain genetic material from an unknown/suspected perpetrator or potential victim. Forensic genetic experts are also able to interpret test results and explain their significance within the context of criminal proceedings.
In some cases, a forensic genetics expert can assist in providing direct testimony such as explaining how hair or blood was collected from a crime scene, analyzing fingerprints or giving opinions about how certain DNA samples were obtained. The field has become increasingly sophisticated as new technologies enable more precise measurements of small variations in DNA. As with all other types of expert witnesses, forensic genetics experts must remain impartial during their testimony; any opinions they form only serve to help inform the jury on questions specifically related to their areas of expertise
