Profession

Retired NYPD Detective and practicing forensic consultant, expert witness, forensic instructor and training consultant in the examination of signatures questioned documents and handwriting problems. Providing professional assistance in case evaluation, courtroom preparation and trial presentation in both criminal prosecution and civil litigation and specializing in cases related to disputed wills, deeds, contracts, forged checks, medical records, threatening and anonymous letters.

Other types of “questioned” document problems may include typewriting, machine printing (commercial graphic arts, laser, ink jet, thermal), paper (watermarks, physical properties, fracture match, latent fingerprints), ink (differentiation, writing instruments), alterations (obliterations, erasures, additions, interlineations), impressions (indented writing, rubber stamp, dry seal, check writer), photocopy and facsimile machine characteristics.

Experience

Assigned and trained as a forensic document examiner in 1982 in the Questioned Document Section of the New York City Police Department Laboratory as a Detective, Document Analyst and the Technical Supervisor.

Retired from the NYPD in 2004 with more than twenty years experience as a forensic scientist, examined thousands of questioned documents, and participated in numerous high profile cases, homicides, kidnappings, bias, identity theft and terrorist related investigations. Processed major crime scenes and given expert testimony at hearings, grand jury and trials including the “Zodiac” homicides and terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Duties and responsibilities included:

• Examining handwriting and questioned documents relating to criminal investigations
• Providing expert testimony in a number of criminal cases throughout New York City
• Training newly assigned personnel
• Editing procedure and training manuals
• Lecturing to detective investigators, police management and district attorneys
• Managing instruments for quality assurance
• Supervising the Questioned Document Unit both technically and administratively
