NARRATIVE REPORT

I am an interventional radiologist and sonologist who specializes in the care of patients with diseases localized to the abdomen, pelvis and thyroid. After completing my training in Radiology at Austin Health, Melbourne, Australia, I completed a dual fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Vascular and Interventional Radiology, and then joined the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital, where I provide clinical care, supervise trainees, teach medical students, direct the activities of the diagnostic ultrasound laboratory and conduct research on clinical applications of new ultrasound technologies, in order to enhance the quality of patient care. In 2010, I founded the MGH Clinical Ultrasound Research Laboratory. This laboratory has received six research grants to date, presently employs four full-time research fellows, carries out clinical ultrasound research, and trains fellows in research methods.

My scholarly activity has had three substantive areas of focus in the past three years:  (1) Abdominal Imaging textbook.  I co-edited a comprehensive textbook, which was published by Elsevier in 2010. This textbook comprises 1,600 pages spread over two volumes, and is widely used in the USA and internationally as a reference text for the subspecialty of Abdominal Imaging. I was extensively involved in the conceptualization and execution of this book project, including co-authorship of 11 chapters.  (2) Medical device design and development. I have formed an active collaboration with the MIT Medical Device Realization Center focused on the design and development of ultrasound-related medical devices. This collaboration has led to a patent for a sonographer ergonomic device that successfully completed a first clinical trial in November 2013. In addition to this I have been extensively involved in the development of devices for optical guidance of sonographic needle placements the co- registration of CT and ultrasound images, and the non-invasive estimation of tissue and blood pressure. As a result of my efforts, I have received multiple inventors’ prizes and patents for medical device design and development. Intellectual property protection requirements have precluded publication of research papers related to these devices during their development.  (3) RSNA Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance.  I am co-chair of the RSNA committee tasked with facilitating the clinical deployment of shear wave elastography through mitigating variability and defining the optimal clinical measurement acquisition parameters, and writing clinical guidelines related to this. In this role, I have substantial responsibility for the way this new technology will be used by US radiologists.

I am also actively involved in the teaching and supervision of medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows. I lecture the residents on applications of diagnostic ultrasound for diseases of the abdomen and pelvis, and informally supervise both residents and medical students during their rotations through the radiology department.
